Projects
The Lower Columbia Bike Project is just getting off the ground, but we hope to make some serious headway in building capacity and getting ready to take advantage of the incredible opportunities available in the area.
MTB
We hope to partner with local area land managers in designing and developing, building and the maintenance of multi-use single trail trails systems. Our goal is to create a network of trails the makes our area a destination and haven for off-road cycling. Recreational trails tourism has been proved to be a sustainable boon to local area economies, and there are success stories all over- it is our hope to make Clatsop County a major trails destination.
We are currently in the process of developing a relationship with the Oregon Department of Forestry. We are extremely fortunate to live in an area with an exciting and progressive recreation management plan that is welcoming and inclusive to off road cycling.
In September of 2000, ODF published the Astoria District Recreation Management Plan. This recreation plan incredibly mirrors a number of our MTB-centric strategic goals.
The non-motorized recreation objectives listed include the development of a trail system behind the Clatsop County Fairgrounds for horse trails and non-motorized use. History has shown us that equestrian use and cycling are extremely compatible on trails designed for such use. Incorporating elements like good sight lines, and utilizing features like chokes and corrals to control user speeds while offering an enjoyable user experience, can minimize user conflict and the entire community is enriched with more trails recreation opportunities.
The bike plan is extremely welcoming to us as cyclists. It is up to us now to make our presence known, and step up and help build a healthy scene.
Gnat Creek
We also wish adopting the Gnat Creek Trail as trail stewards; our plan is to organize work parties consisting of all types of non-motorized users and perform trail maintenance. In time, we hope to contribute to extending the length of this great trail.
The Astoria Forest Trails
In addition, we hope to restore the trails in the hills above Astoria. The trails have been hit hard, much like the Claremont Trails. Until the fallen timber has been harvested, we’re limited on what we can do, due to the safety issues. A trails plan was started in 2006, but stalled.

Fort Stevens
Fort Stevens State Park has an great network of paved bike paths that are very popular with visitors. There are also miles of natural surface trails that are excellent for cycling, especially during the wet parts of the year. The soil there possess a high amount of sand that drains very well. While not the ideal destination for advanced mountain bikers seeking technical challenge, they are excellent trails for beginners and intermediate riders. As they are best in wet weather, they are a great resource for training rides. The trails would be much improved with the presence of signs. We hope to determine the status of these trails soon.

Road
It is our intent to organize recreational rides and events, as well as the promotion of the bicycle as an alternative form of transportation. At the moment, we are looking for volunteers to come forth to help with organize road specific events.
BMX
We are currently looking to network with the local BMX riders, as we plan to aid in maintaining the newly established BMX track as well as the begin proposals of a bicycle skills park. Ideally something that could be ridden in inclement weather as well. Looking to ride? There is a BMX track at the Clatsop Country fairgrounds. Click here to view a photo gallery from the last race.
